With the TV industry on the wane – an industry I spent 15 years working in – I went looking for a side hustle. Somehow, that search led me… to egg cups.
It all began almost 12 years ago with a tongue-in-cheek review of an egg cup. That review snowballed into a collaboration with Birmingham company KitchenCraft, who produced 50 cups of our own designs. We sold them for charity (Fresh Start for Hens) and I thought that would be the end of it.
But when people said, “You’ll never make egg cups work,” I took that as a challenge. And so MEGGACUPS was born: London’s first egg cup shop.
Now, some might say it’s just a rack in my mate Noj’s coffee shop. But to me, it’s 2 square feet of prime London retail. And we’re already planning to expand – to four square feet, with another rack. A megga-store in the making.
Jokes aside, things are going surprisingly well. We’re already making bespoke egg cups for festivals (including the London Jazz Festival), and this Christmas we’ll be launching a brand-new design that I genuinely believe could become the biggest egg cup seller the industry has ever seen.
From a silly idea to an accidental business, MEGGACUPS is proof that sometimes the most unlikely side hustles are the ones that actually stick.
